چکیده

density-dependence by using partial correlation coefficients as a test statistic. The extended tests detected delayed density-dependence in 8 15 time series (8.9% 16.7%) at the 5% level (two-tailed test). 5. The high incidence of direct density-dependence and the low, but significant, incidence of delayed density-dependence in these vole populations are discussed. Delayed maturation at high densities by social interference and a rich generalist fauna are thought to represent plausible mechanisms generating direct density-dependence. As a candidate mechanism for delayed densitydependence specialist predator and climate conditions (affecting the exposure to specialist predators) are discussed.

Interaction between seasonal density-dependence structures and length of the seasons explain the geographical structure of the dynamics of voles in Hokkaido: an example of seasonal forcing.

The grey-sided vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus) is distributed over the entire island of Hokkaido, Japan, across which it exhibits multi-annual density cycles in only parts of the island (the north-eastern part); in the remaining part of the island, only seasonal density changes occur. Using annual sampling of 189 grey-sided vole populations, we deduced the geographical structure in their second-...

A gradient from stable to cyclic populations of Clethrionomys rufocanus in Hokkaido, Japan.

A total of 31 years of abundance data from 90 populations of the grey-sided vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus) in northern Hokkaido (Japan) were analysed with respect to population dynamic characteristics. Both non-periodic and multi-annually periodic fluctuations occur among the studied populations. The length of the period varies from 2 to 5 years. The dynamics appear approximately linear on a lo...

Interspecific and intraspecific competition as causes of direct and delayed density dependence in a fluctuating vole population.

A 3- to 5-year cycle of vole abundances is a characteristic phenomenon in the ecology of northern regions, and their explanation stands as a central theoretical challenge in population ecology. Although many species of voles usually coexist and are in severe competition for food and breeding space, the role of interspecific competition in vole cycles has never been evaluated statistically. Afte...

Seasonality, density dependence, and population cycles in Hokkaido voles.

Voles and lemmings show extensive variation in population dynamics regulated across and within species. In an attempt to develop and test generic hypotheses explaining these differences, we studied 84 populations of the gray-sided vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus) in Hokkaido, Japan. We show that these populations are limited by a combination of density-independent factors (such as climate) and de...

Density-Dependent Prevalence of Francisella tularensis in Fluctuating Vole Populations, Northwestern Spain

Tularemia in humans in northwestern Spain is associated with increases in vole populations. Prevalence of infection with Francisella tularensis in common voles increased to 33% during a vole population fluctuation. This finding confirms that voles are spillover agents for zoonotic outbreaks. Ecologic interactions associated with tularemia prevention should be considered.
